UAN: Tell us about your Lil’ Naturelle
Sots is her nickname. She’s 5 years old and she’s in kindergarten. I think her hair type is a mix of 4a and 3c, but don’t hold me to it because I’m not sure. I believe she is a combination. Her hair is like a sandy brown, so it always looks dry, and it sucks the life out of oil! (UAN – the color sounds GORGEOUS!!!!)
UAN: What’s your Lil’ Naturelle’s hair care routine
I use a clarifying shampoo by Kinky Curl, or Carol’s Daughter, but I try to co-wash most of the time.
UAN: Do you have an actual hair day—what’s that like?
I only have an actual hair day if I have to do her hair for a certain occasion. I would like to start designating days like a routine. In some months her hair might need to be washed more often; I just try to find moderation. I do her hair when it needs to be done. I can tell, just by looking at it, when it needs to get done. Styles don’t last long because her hair gets frizzy fast and I am still learning how to use styling products. (UAN – sad to say, you’re not the only one, Baby Naturelle’s hair doesn’t stay in one style longer than a day)
UAN: Favorite hair products if any
Coconut oil, shea moisture mist, olive oil, shea moisture curling creme, yes to carrots pampering conditioner, Aveda, Rosemary mint shampoo and conditioner, as well as their smooth infusion conditioner, knot today leave in, bee mine hair growth serum, Giovanni smooth as silk deeper moisture conditioner, Shea Moisture Moisture retention shampoo, shea moisture restorative conditioner, Zuresh natural curl
definer and moisture shampoo, Aubrey Organics white camellia ultra-smoothing conditioner, natural & organic styling gel extra conditioning formula African formula. (UAN – wow, that’s a mouth full! Glad to know I’m not the only product junkie around here!)

UAN: What if your daughter says “I want to relax my hair.”? What would you say?
I would ask why? I would give my opinion but ultimately, we all have to live our own life. I can direct her to the path but she has to walk it, and whatever she chooses it’s what will inspire her to become the women she is meant to be. I just would hope that it’s never because of lack of self-love because then I would have failed her on what I was supposed to have instilled in her.
UAN: What are your favorite styles?
I don’t really have a favorite style because I am not really a styler. I am learning as I go. I have come a long way but I see where I can get better. I favor styles that tend to bring some of her hair to her face whether it is a couple of twists or braids to the side of her face. I want to get better so she learns how to rock her hair and make her own identity wearing her natural hair and never waver on her self- confidence when it comes to how she views her natural hair in society. She challenges me, but I notice that I do some of my best work when she has to go somewhere, or take pictures. Her hair inspires my hair and I wish I had someone to do my hair like I do hers. Lol (UAN – well said, I would love someone to do my hair too.)
UAN: Do you have any hair tips for parents struggling to manage their child’s hair?
Just watch the response of your child’s hair with each product used and don’t be afraid to try things a second, third or fourth time. I believe every question will be answered with staying consistent and watching and learning what works and doesn’t for your child’s hair. Make de-tangling as stress-free as possible it just becomes aggravating for you and your child then styling the hair and the mood becomes a disaster. (UAN – so true, I have found that keeping a good spirit during the detangling process definitely helps with the styling process!)
