Fairy knots are something that every natural has seen, felt, or experienced…and let me tell you – as deceptive as the term fairy knots is – fairy knots are not fun mystical creatures in your hair. Fairy knots tend to be a rather frustrating issue (at least for me) to deal with.
What are they?
Fairy knots are typically tiny knots on a single strand of hair. These little culprits like to hang out at the ends of your hair – but as all fairies, they tend to be adventurous and can be found farther up a strand of hair.
Where do they come from?
Even though fairies are considered fictional beings, fairy knots are NOT! It is somewhat of a mystery how fairy knots are created…some believe that fairy knots occur on the tightly curly but the reality is that fairy knots do not discriminate. Even though they are more prominent on curly textured hair, fairy knots can be found on all types of hair.
What do they look like?
Fairy knots are small…I mean really small. I do not have a good enough lens on my camera – but here is what I was able to capture…and yes, this darn thing is in my hair!
How do you get rid of them?
I’ve heard people can slowly detangle fairy knots….but from the picture above, I’m not really sure how long and how successful someone would be, as for me, when I see them, I clip them! That’s it!
How to prevent them?
Honestly, I am not sure. Here are a list of things that I have tried or read that may work. Keep in mind, that when I find a fairy knot in my hair – I cut it right away. Even though I feel like I am often plagued with the fairies, I will continue to do what I can to avoid them.
- seal your ends on a regular basis – with an oil of your choice
- don’t comb your hair while dry
- sleep on a satin pillowcase or wrap your hair at night
- keep your hair moisturized
- increase protective styling
Have you experience the joys (sarcastically speaking) of fairy knots? What do you do to prevent them? What do you do when you find them?
