Media and Natural Hair

I’ve been natural for a little more than 9 years straight and been toying with my natural hair for over 15 years.  I big chopped several times, started locs several times, and so forth.  When I first went natural there was not all this talk about “transitioning”, doing the “bc”, or even many YouTube videos…honestly there were but a few websites that I perused and that was it.  Now I find that there is SOOOOO much out there regarding natural hair care, transitioning care, loc maintenance, etc.  Honestly – I feel that Natural Hair has made it big because it is not only on typical African American Media Streams like Jet or Essence, it’s all over everyday advertisements.   Today’s online edition of The New York Times has a video by filmmaker Zina Saro-Wiwa called Transition (which can be seen below). In the past New York Times has also showcased several natural hair bloggers in an effort to provide support – because “‘Going Natural’ Requires Lots of Help”.

It has been a long time since I have transitioned, and when I did, times where different, so please share your thoughts, let me know what you think.  How has being natural changed you and what have you learned since being natural?

As always, thanks for stopping by!
